Laser hair removal

Most women know how hard it is to maintain your skin always smooth and hairless. Razor, wax or depilation cream have become an integral part of beauty ritual of almost every woman. As a result, most of women have at least once thought: "I want to get rid of body hair forever!“. With the help of special lasers, this is possible today.

About the procedure

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure during which the diode laser, which generates intense pulsed beam of specific wavelength (810 + 940 nm), removes unwanted hair. The energy of laser is used to prevent regrowth of hair. During the procedure, the energy of laser must penetrate a few millimeters into the skin to reach the hair root. When energy reaches the melanin in the hair, the light is absorbed, and converted into heat. The darker and thicker the hair, the more heat is produced. The heat damages the matrix (genocells) cells around the hair and the area next to the hair, which is responsible for the regrowth of hair. High power reaches hair follicles very deep. This enables a drastic reduction in body hair in the treated area. Diode laser, which is used for hair removal in Poliklinika Bagatin has become synonymous with secure epilation with long term results.

Although laser hair removal effectively removes body hair, the number of treatments depend on the psychosomatic and physiological factors that determine how many treatments are necessary for the desired result. The effectiveness of treatment depends on the color and thickness of hair, as well as the depth of their roots, so it takes more treatment in case of red and blonde hair in comparison to black hair. The result of treatments also depends on possible endocrine problems, and the genotype of the client. To get maximum efficiency, it is important to agree upon a treatment plan with a specialist, depending on your skin type and hair.

These photographs show the real condition before and after the procedure. The results of each procedure are subject to individualities and normal variability of surgical results. Consequently, Bagatin Clinic cannot guarantee equal results for each individual client.

It usually takes several treatments of laser epilation to have long lasting effect in the treated area Also, occasional maintenance treatments might be needed. The most common treated areas are legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, bikini area, arms and intimate zone. However, unwanted hair can be removed from almost every part of the body, except the eyelids and the eyeball area.

Am I a candidate?

Laser hair removal is best for women who want to achieve long lasting smoothness of their legs. The most suitable candidates for this procedure are those with lighter skin color and darker hair, but now also people with darker skin can undergo laser epilation. Also, if you have problem with ingrown hair, this is for you. After just a few treatments, you can forget about the painful ingrown hair which can occur.

By the end of this month, before any laser treatment, we have provided a free consultation with our medical cosmetologists where you can learn the number of treatments and where you will find in detail everything about the treatment, preparation and precautions.

How do you prepare?

Laser hair removal

If you are interested in a permanent laser hair removal, select specialists who specializes in dermatology or cosmetic surgery.

Our specialist will offer you special advice for the preparation before laser hair removal:

  • Shave body hair the day before treatment.
  • Avoid tanning. Darkened skin increases the risk of side effects such as skin-lightening. If you have a tan, whether from exposure to sun or self-tanning lotions, wait 7-10 days before you undergoing laser hair removal treatment in order for your complexion to regain natural shade. Some specialists even advise exposure to sun for up to six weeks prior to laser hair removal.
  • Avoid anti-cellulite treatments 4 weeks prior to the treatment. Antibiotics use for inflammatory acne are also contraindications and you should stop taking antibiotics at least 4-6 weeks before laser treatment.
  • Do not pull or wax body hair, nor use electric epilator 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. Such treatments of hair removal can disrupt the hair follicle and affect the permanent laser hair removal.
  • Remove makeup and deodorant.

During the procedure

After application of the hydrogel, the handle of laser is pressed against the skin and moved over the treated area. The laser emits energy pulses in the range 8-14 mm, and during the treatment a client feels a slight sting. Before the treatment, anaesthetic cream can be applied for more comfortable sensation. Permanent hair laser removal is very pleasant due to the cooling system of the skin that is built into the laser. Cooling system has a slight anaesthetic feature that allows sensitive areas to be treated relatively painless. You might feel a slight pinching or stings during treatment, but most clients tolerated procedure well.

Laser hair removal

The important thing is to undergo a treatment several times in period of 4 to 8 months, because hair grows in certain stages and melanin is found only during growth stage. Different types of hair have different time of hair growth, and number of treatment depend on the type of hair and skin, as well on genetic predisposition.  It also depends from person to person how many treatments are needed and should treatments stop after a year.

The treatment of small areas such as the upper lip, may take only a few minutes. The treatment of large areas like the back, can take an hour.

Recovery time

You may notice redness and swelling the first few hours after laser hair removal treatment. To reduce discomfort, on the treated area you can apply ice. Our staff will recommend gel or another type of cream or lotion. If your skin reacts strongly immediately after laser hair removal treatment, the specialist can apply steroid cream.

After laser epilation, avoid sun exposure: natural sunlight and tanning beds. Also, be prepared for possible falling of hair in the first few weeks after treatment.

Precautions

The most common side effects of permanent laser hair removal:

  • Skin irritation - occasional discomfort, redness and swelling are possible after laser hair removal. All signs and symptoms usually disappear within a few hours.
  • Pigment change - laser hair removal can darken or lighten the treated skin, usually temporarily. Skin lightening can occur mainly in people with darker skin, especially if the laser is improperly used in unsuitable environments.
  • It is rare, but laser hair removal can cause swelling, peeling, sores or other changes in skin texture.
  • Permanent hair removal is not recommended on the eyelids and the surrounding area for possible serious injury.
